Effectiveness of smartphone-based intervention to improve knowledge and practice on prevention of school violence and sexual abuse at 4 secondary schools in Hanoi 2020-2021

Abstract

This study aimed at evaluation of enhancement of practice and knowledge in prevention of school and sexual violence via using smart phone applications at 4 secondary school in Hanoi from 2020 to 2021. Study design was uncontrolled community intervention. Sample size of the study was 712 secondary students 4 secondary schools in Dong Da dítrict, Hanoi City. Intervention results was significantly contributed to enhance knowledge and practice in prevention of general viollence and sexual violence among secondary students. Knowledge score in practice, signs, consequences of violence tended to increase after intervention. Knowledge scores about physical violence tended to increase the most. The students' general knowledge score on sexual abuse increased from 16.2 to 19.9. The mean scores on all aspects of sexual abuse increased statistically. After the intervention, there was a significant improvement in practice with positive behaviors such as seeking help, calling hotlines for support; while negative behavior like rallying friends to get revenge, encouraging people to do that behavior tended to decrease. The students' practice of mental violence and positive behaviors towards sexual abuse increased significantly. Interventions to prevent school violence and sexual abuse by smart phone applications proved to be very effective.
