Abstract

Object: Evaluation of the effectiveness of surgery to correct all tetralogy of Fallot in children
under 1 year old at Hanoi Heart Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Thanh Hoa province.
Methods: A prospective follow-up study on 115 patients at Thanh Hoa Children’s Hospital
and Hanoi Heart Hospital for 3 years.
Results: The rate of early mortality after surgery, complications immediately after surgery,
reoperation during the hospital stay and early complications after surgery was 1.7%,
respectively; 0.9%; 5.3% and 53.9%. SpO2 and heart failure classification according to
ROSS significantly improved after surgery. Only 1 patient with arrhythmia was detected at
the time of discharge 1 month later, no longer having this symptom. The degree of tricuspid
regurgitation increased at hospital discharge compared with before surgery. The degree of
pulmonary regurgitation decreased slightly after 1 month of discharge compared to when
discharged from the hospital. But the degree of regurgitation of the pulmonary valve and the
tricuspid valve did not increase significantly over time. The maximal transvalvular pressure
difference and right ventricular dilatation also improved significantly at the time of followup compared with preoperatively or at hospital discharge.
Conclusion: The results of the study show that the total surgical repair of tetralogy of Fallot
has many positive effects on children under 1 year of age.
