Abstract

Objectives: Describe the state of stress, anxiety, and depression in stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation at Nghe An Friendship General Hospital in 2024 and the effect of age on the improvement of emotional disorders.

Subjects and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study on 198 patients diagnosed with cerebral stroke at the Stroke Center and Rehabilitation Department, Nghe An Friendship General Hospital from January 2024 to December 2024

Results: The group of patients aged 50-80 years old accounted for the highest proportion with 75.3%, the female/male ratio was 1.2/1. The right hemisphere was the most common area of damage (50.5%). Cerebral infarction accounted for the majority with a rate of 71.7%. At the time of admission, 67.2% of patients had emotional disorders; 8.1% of patients had severe or very severe stress; 7.1% of patients had severe or very severe anxiety disorders; 10.1% of patients had severe or very severe depression. At 3 months later, the proportion of patients without emotional disorders accounted for 39.9%, the rate of stress after 3 months had decreased compared to when first admitted to the hospital, 14.7% compared to 28.8%, p = 0.001. In the 50-80 age group, the difference in stress and anxiety rates between admission and 3 months was statistically significant. In the over 80 age group, the three month-stress rate is statistically higher than the rate at admission.

Conclusion: The rate of emotional disorders in stroke patients when newly admitted to the hospital is very high. Improving emotional disorders through rehabilitation treatment takes a long time to be effective and needs to be combined with other psychological therapies.
