31. RESULTS OF SURGICAL TREATMENT OF BILATERAL CHRONIC SUBDURAL HEMATOMA AT THAI NGUYEN CENTRAL HOSPITAL

Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the results of surgical treatment of bilateral chronic subdural hematoma at Thai Nguyen Central Hospital.


Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of 40 patients was diagnosed with bilateral chronic subdural hematoma who were operated burr hole craniostomy, irrigation and drainage between 01/2022 and 01/2024 at Thai Nguyen Central Hospital.


Results: In 40 cases of bilateral chronic subdural hematoma, there were 30 males and 10 females. The average age of the study group was 69.45 ± 14.33 years old, 75% of males. Early improvement in clinical symptoms (24 - 48 hours after surgery) accounted for 87.5%. Postoperative complications were acute epidural hematoma (7.5%), acute subdural hematoma (7.5%. The average length of hospital stay was 11.85 days. Upon discharge, 97.5% of patients had good consciousness and good motor recovery (85%). The recurrence rate was 12.5%, the mortality rate was 0%. Re-examination according to GOS scale, good results 92.5%, and mild sequelae were 7.5%, the patient’s general clinical condition gradually improved, with statistical significance (p<0,05).


Conclusion: Surgical treament of bilateral subdural hematoma at Thai Nguyen Central Hospital has given good results. The method of 01-hole craniostomy, irrigation and drainage is a safe and effective surgery, should be maintained and widely applied.
