Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is one of the most common chronic non-infectious diseases today. Poor sleep quality tends to increase, negatively affecting patient care and treatment. There are many studies demonstrating that poor quality of life is associated with increased risks of hypertension and other chronic diseases. In Vietnam, there have not been many studies on sleep quality in hypertensive patients.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of poor sleep quality and related factors in hypertensive patients at the Examination Department of Thong Nhat General Hospital - Dong Nai.

Research subjects and methods: Cross-sectional study on 380 hypertensive patients at Thong Nhat General Hospital - Dong Nai from April 2023 to September 2023. All subjects eligible to participate in the study were interviewed directly through a set of prepared questions; Poor sleep quality was assessed by the average PSQI score with a cutoff of >5. Using statistical hypothesis tests to determine association, with p < 0.05.

Results: The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 61.8% (PSQI score >5), the average PSQI score was 12 ± 6. After analyzing the variables: average age (p<0.000), age group (p<0.000), average number of medications (p<0.000), hypertension grade (p<0.000), depression (p <0.001), cardiovascular disease (p<0.001), musculoskeletal disease ( p < 0.001) is statistically related to poor quality of life.

Conclusion: The prevalence of hypertensive patients with poor quality of life is still quite high; It is necessary to concentrate on assessing the quality of life in patients with the following characteristics: older age group, using many drugs, high blood pressure, depression, cardiovascular disease, and musculoskeletal disease.
