ANXIETY DISORDER AND RELATED FACTORS AMONG GENERAL MEDICAL STUDENTS AT PHAM NGOC THACH UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE

Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of anxiety disorder and associated factors among general medical students at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from August to December 2022 among general medical students in the academic year 2022 – 2023. Anxiety disorder was measured by the StateTrait Anxiety Inventory scale (STAI). Results: The study interviewed 478 students, females accounted for 56.3% and the percentage of students with anxiety disorder is quite high (44.3%). Factors that can increase the likelihood of anxiety disorder include academic performance, number of siblings in the family, academic pressure from family, high frequency of exams and frequent failure/debt. Protective factors that can help reduce anxiety disorder include accommodation, part-time work, level of satisfaction with the field of study, feeling of a happy family, suitable internship schedule and satisfaction with the teaching method at the school. Conclusion: The percentage of students with anxiety disorder is quite high, families and schools need to pay attention and take appropriate support measures to improve mental health and help students improve their academic results.
