Abstract

 Objective: To analyze the advantages and challenges in performing the venous blood collection procedure by laboratory technicians at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, District 1 Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, in 2025.

Methods: This was a qualitative cross-sectional descriptive study. Data were collected through five in-depth interviews with hospital leaders and managers from relevant departments and units, and one focus group discussion with laboratory technicians. The qualitative themes included human resources, financial resources, information systems, equipment and technology, and management and governance.

Results and Conclusion: The implementation of the venous blood collection procedure at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, District 1 Hospital demonstrated several advantages. The laboratory workforce was sufficient in number, appropriately allocated, and met professional competency standards, with a strong sense of responsibility. Salaries and allowances were relatively stable; laboratory equipment generally met professional requirements, with some devices being modernized. Standard operating procedures were developed and implemented relatively consistently, and the working environment was clean with information technology supporting professional activities. Management practices included regular training and routine supervision.

However, several challenges remained, including uneven workload distribution across shifts, limited experience among younger technicians, non-uniform investment in equipment, and restricted training budgets. Information systems were updated slowly, and infrastructure and supporting software were occasionally unstable.
