Abstract

Objective: Hypertension is a chronic disease that requires adherence of the patients to prevent unwanted complications. This study aims to evaluate the Knowledge and Practice on hypertension treatment adherence of hypertensive patients being managed as outpatients at An Giang Cardiovascular Hospital (ACH) in 2021.

Methods: This cross-sectional study (quantitative method) was conducted within 2 months (April-June/2021) at ACH. Quantitative data was collected by face-to-face interview for a randomly selected 210 hypertensive outpatients. Data was analyzed using SPSS ver 25.0.

Findings: 81.4% of hypertensive outpatients had good knowledge about hypertension treatment. Regarding practice, rate of adherence to periodic check-up was 98.6%, followed by adherence to lifestyle changes (72.4%), adherence to home blood pressure monitor (65.7%) and drug adherence at the lowest rate at 49.5%. The rate of adherence to all 4 contents on treatment adherence was 65 people, accounting for 15.2%.

Conclusions: ACH needs to strengthen counseling for outpatients on treatment adherence and follow-up visit. Further, hospital should enhance outpatient management through electronic medical records and follow-up appointments. Finally, it is necessary to mobilize family members to support hypertensive outpatients during treatment.
