THE NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF ETHNIC MINORITY STUDENTS TO THE ETHNIC BOARDING JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN TWO DISTRICTS, BAC KAN PROVINCE

Abstract

Objectives: To describe the nutritional status of ethnic minority students atthe ethnic boarding junior secondary schools in two districts, Bac Kan province in 2019.


Research subjects and methods: The study was conducted according to the descriptive method, cross-sectional design on 554 ethnic minority students at two ethnic boarding junior secondary schools in  district and Van Tran district, Yen Bai province. Data was collected by interview method by pre-designed questionnaire and weighed and measured directly. The nutritional status of students was assessed according to the 2007 WHO Z-score classification for students aged 10 to 19 years.


Results: The prevalence of malnutrition among ethnic minority students in two districts of Bac Kan was quite high at 20.3%, of which 16.1% was stunting, 3.8% was wasting body malnutrition. The prevalence of overweight and obesity of students in the two ethnic minority schools in Bac Kan province is 8.2%, of which the prevalence of overweight was 6.9% and obesity was 1.3%.


Recommendations: The prevalence of stunting was still high, overweight and obesity were on the rise. Therefore, it is necessary to have timely interventions to improve the nutritional status of students.
