Abstract

Objective: Describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of endometrial polyps in infertile patients at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Subjects and methods: Descriptive study, retrospective data of 194 infertile patients diagnosed with endometrial polyps and treated at the Central Obstetrics Hospital from August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2023.

Results: Clinical: the average age of patients was 31.6 ± 5.8. Patients with a history of never having given birth accounted for the highest rate at 59.3%; the rate of never having had an abortion accounted for the highest rate at 76.8%. The most common symptom of abnormal vaginal bleeding was menorrhagia with 22.1%. The rate of anemia was 17.1%. There were 20.1% with cervicitis. Most patients had normal uterine size (98.5%). Paraclinical: 100% of endometrial polyps are diagnosed by saline infusion sonohysterography. The average thickness of the endometrial mucosa on ultrasound was 7.9 ± 2.6 mm. The average size of polyps was 10.8 ± 5.3 mm.

Conclusion: The clinical characteristics of endometrial polyps in infertile patients were quite poor, one of the most common symptoms was abnormal vaginal bleeding. 2D transvaginal ultrasound and saline infusion sonohysterography are common methods for the initial diagnosis of endometrial polyps.
