Objective: To investigate the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients with hydatidiform mole at Kien Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital.
Subject and method: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 55 patients diagnosed with hydatidiform mole by histopathology and treated at the Department of Obstetrics, Kien Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, from January 2022 to December 2024. Data were collected from medical records and analyzed using SPSS 20.0.
Results: Among 55 cases, women aged 18–39 accounted for 81.8%. Most patients had no history of abnormal pregnancy (87.3%). Common symptoms included vaginal bleeding (54.5%), nausea/vomiting (52.7%), and uterine size larger than gestational age (65.5%). The mean β-hCG level in complete moles was 240,572.5 mIU/mL, higher than in partial moles (103,247.2 mIU/mL, p = 0.043). Hemoglobin ≥10 g/dL was observed in 65.5%, and hyperthyroidism in 7.3%. Ultrasound correctly diagnosed 78.2% of cases (83.7% in complete moles; 58.3% in partial moles). Theca lutein cysts were present in 32.7% of patients, mostly <6 cm (61.1%).
Conclusion: Hydatidiform mole predominantly occurs in women of reproductive age, particularly in cases of complete mole with markedly elevated β-hCG levels. Combining ultrasound with quantitative β-hCG measurement facilitates early diagnosis, effective monitoring, and reduction of malignant progression risk.
