Abstract

Objective: To describe the characteristics and levels of depression in chronic kidney patients undergoing hemodialysis at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital in 2026

Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 334 chronic kidney patients undergoing hemodialysis. Data were collected through a questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0 software.

Results: The group aged ≥60 years accounted for 53.3%; male 54.2%; the majority were married (76.6%). The majority had an education level from primary to high school (81.7%), were economically dependent (61.1%), and unemployed (79.0%). The duration of illness was mainly 1–5 years (36.2%); 48.2% had ≥2 comorbidities. Family was the main source of support (75.7%). The overall depression rate was 72.2%, including mild depression at 34.1%, moderate depression at 21.0%, moderate-severe depression at 9.6%, and severe depression at 7.5%; non-depressive individuals accounted for 27.8%. More severe depression was more common in the group aged ≥60, economically dependent, unemployed, and with multiple comorbidities.

Conclusion: Depression is prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis, primarily at mild to moderate levels. Increased screening and psychological support are needed for high-risk groups.
