Abstract

This study aimed to characterize the activities and assess changes following rehabilitation (RE) treatment at An Giang Central General Hospital. The interventional study, a before-and-after comparison without a control group, involved 152 patients with first-time stroke and hemiplegia. Patients received REH exercises for 30-45 minutes/day, 5 days/week, combined with nursing care and guidance from family members. The level of independence in daily living was assessed using the Barthel scale at the time of intervention and one month after intervention. Before intervention, the proportion of patients completely dependent on others in daily living was over 60%. After one month of REH, the average Barthel score increased significantly (p<0.001). The proportion of patients achieving independence or mild dependence increased significantly. Factors associated with recovery outcomes include age, gender, level of consciousness, type of injury, and lifestyle habits (p < 0.05). Early care and rehabilitation significantly improve functional activity and reduce dependence in hemiplegic patients due to stroke. The early care and rehabilitation model should be implemented in provincial hospitals to improve the quality of life for patients.
