Objectives: To determine the incidence of common post-anesthesia complications and evaluate the role of nurses in their early recognition and initial intervention. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 150 patients (≥18 years) undergoing general anesthesia and monitored in the PACU. Twenty-five PACU nurses participated. Data included patient characteristics, type of surgery, complications, time of detection, and initial management. Results: Post-anesthesia complications occurred in 44.7% of patients, mainly postoperative pain (16.7%), nausea/vomiting (14%), hypotension (6.7%), delirium (4%), and respiratory depression (3.3%). A total of 55.3% had no complications. Nurses detected 80% of complications within 5 minutes. Higher complication rates were observed in gynecological and orthopedic surgeries. All nurses expressed the need for further training in early recognition of complications. Conclusion: Post-anesthesia complications remain frequent but are usually detected and managed promptly by nurses. Strengthening nurse training, standardizing handover protocols, and applying smart monitoring systems are recommended to improve postoperative safety.
