Khe hở môi – vòm miệng là một trong những khuyết tật bẩm sinh thường gặp nhất ở vùng đầu mặt, không những gây ảnh hưởng nặng nề tới thẫm mỹ, chức năng mà còn ảnh hưởng tới tâm lí xã hội của bệnh nhân cũng như gia đình. Đặc biệt, trong những trường hợp khe hở rộng, các cấu trúc giải phẫu ở hai bên khe hở bị thiếu hụt và biến dạng nhiều gây khó khăn cho việc phẫu thuật. Việc điều trị chỉnh hình trước phẫu thuật, đặc biệt là điều trị với khí cụ chỉnh hình mũi – xương ổ răng (NASAL AVEOLAR MOLDING: N.A.M) gần đây đang được quan tâm nhiều hơn, vì nó giúp cải thiện được vị trí và hình dáng của các cấu trúc của khuôn mặt, tạo điều kiện thuận lợi để đạt kết quả phẫu thuật tối ưu nhất. Mục tiêu điều trị với khí cụ N.A.M trước phẫu thuật nhằm giảm độ rộng và tăng sự cân xứng của các cấu trúc hai bên khe hở, bao gồm môi, mũi và xương ổ răng. Với các kết quả và lợi ích mang lại, điều trị với khí cụ N.A.M ngay sau khi sinh ở những trẻ khe hở môi – vòm miệng ngày càng được khuyến khích và quan tâm nhiều hơn.
