Hiện nay có rất nhiều phương pháp dùng để chẩn đoán nấm đã ra đời và được áp dụng tại các cơ sở y tế, tuy nhiên mỗi phương pháp sẽ có những ưu - nhược điểm khác nhau như độ nhạy, độ chính xác, thời gian,... Để cải thiện độ chính xác và tốc độ chẩn đoán nhanh nhiễm trùng nấm, một số phương pháp mới đã ra đời dựa trên sự kết hợp những phương pháp cũ sẵn có. Hầu hết các phương pháp cải tiến này đều độc lập với việc phân lập mầm bệnh, điều đó có nghĩa là chẩn đoán chuyển từ được coi là đã được chứng minh sang có khả năng xảy ra. Mặc dù có lợi thế là không phụ thuộc vào nuôi cấy, nhưng phần lớn các phương pháp đều thiếu sự chuẩn hóa. Bài tổng quan này nhằm mục đích xem xét phương pháp chẩn đoán nhiễm trùng nấm toàn thân, từ phân loại chẩn đoán, thông qua các phương pháp được coi là "tiêu chuẩn vàng", đến các phương pháp phân tử hiện đang được sử dụng và cuối cùng đề cập đến một số phương pháp tiếp cận mang tính tương lai hơn.
