16. RESULTS OF EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTION IN CONTROL OF HYPERURICEMIA IN END-STAGE RENAL DISEASE PATIENTS ON HEMODIALYSIS AT CA MAU GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the results of educational intervention in controlling hyperuricemia in endstage renal disease (ESRD) patients on hemodialysis.

Subject and method: A longitudinal follow-up study of 211 ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis at Ca Mau General Hospital from July 2022 to April 2023.

Results: 211 patients participated in the study, mean age was 49.54±12.82. There were 88.2% of ESRD patients with hyperuricemia. After 3 months of educational intervention, 26.4% of patients achieved their serum UA target; after 6 months, nearly 2/3 of the patients achieved the treatment goal, the effectiveness index increased from 26.4% to 71.4%, p = 0.001. The mean UA concentration before intervention was 8.46±1.4 mg/dL, after 3 months was 7.35±1.79mg/dL and after 6 months was 5.17±2.34mg/dL, p= 0.001. Female gender and the habit of regularly eating purine-rich foods were independently associated with the rate of not reaching UA targets after educational intervention.

Conclusion: The rate of hyperuricemia in ESRD patients was very high, 88.2%. Educational intervention with lifestyle changes in patients undergoing hemodialysis was effective in controlling serum UA.
