Spinal anesthesia is the main anesthetic method in lower limb surgery.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of phenylephrine in treating hypotension compared with ephedrine after spinal anesthesia for emergency lower limb trauma surgery. Methodology: This is a controlled clinical trial on 60 patients with lower limb surgery divided into 2 groups using Ephedrine and Phenylephrine at the Anesthesiology and Resuscitation Center, Viet Duc Hospital.
Results: 100% of patients in both study groups achieved T6 blockade. 13.3% of patients in the Ephedrine group had a decrease in blood pressure of 20% compared to baseline blood pressure. This rate in the Phenylephrine group was 10.0%. The average number of times to treat hypotension with Ephedrine was 1.1±0.3 times; in the Phenylephrine group, it was 1.3±0.6 times. The total number of patients with side effects in the Ephedrine group was significantly lower than in the Phenylephrine group (16.6% vs. 40.0%, p<0.05).
Conclusion: The effectiveness of Ephedrine and Phenylephrine in treating hypotension in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia for lower limb trauma surgery is equivalent. Using Phenylephrin will help reduce the rate of side effects in patients undergoing lower limb surgery.
