35. EVALUATION OF LONG-TERM ENAMEL REMINERALIZATION EFFICACY OF A TOOTHPASTE CONTAINING 5000 PPM FLUORIDE THROUGH EXPERIMENTATION

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the remineralization outcomes of a toothpaste containing 5000 ppm fluoride by assessing the changes in enamel surface using a surface profilometer.

Subjects and Methods: The experimental study was conducted on 90 permanent premolars that were extracted for orthodontic reasons. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 was demineralized until it reached the Diagnodent D1 score, while Group 2 was demineralized until it reached the Diagnodent D2 score. The D1 and D2 teeth were further divided into three subgroups, with each subgroup consisting of 15 teeth. These subgroups underwent remineralization using different types of toothpaste (Colgate Pevident 5000 ppm fluoride, HMU 5000 ppm fluoride, and Colgate toothpaste containing 1450 ppm fluoride) for 30 cycles. The teeth were measured for Sa score and Diagnodent Laser score at various time points: before demineralization, after demineralization, and after remineralization.

Results: The results showed a difference in surface smoothness between the D1 and D2 lesion groups. The remineralization efficacy of the same toothpaste on D1 and D2 lesions was different: the enamel surface of D1 lesions achieved higher smoothness after remineralization with the same toothpaste compared to D2 lesions. The remineralization efficacy among different kinds of toothpaste also varied: Colgate Pevident 5000 ppm fluoride toothpaste showed the highest remineralization efficacy (resulting in the highest surface smoothness restoration). In comparison, HMU 5000 ppm fluoride toothpaste and Colgate Total 1450 ppm fluoride toothpaste showed lower efficacy with no significant difference.

Conclusion: The toothpaste containing 5000 ppm fluoride has a good remineralization effect in the experimental study. The highest level of remineralization was observed with Pevident 5000 ppm toothpaste, followed by HMU 5000 ppm fluoride toothpaste, and the lowest level was observed with Colgate 1450 ppm fluoride toothpaste.
