Objectives: To systematically review the biological characteristics and potential applications of plant-derived exosomes in traditional medicine.
Overview of the method: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Full-text articles in English, Chinese, and Vietnamese published between January 2013 and March 2026 were retrieved from PubMed, CNKI, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect. Studies were included if they focused on the isolation, characterization, and application of plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEV) or plant-derived exosome-like nanovesicles (PELN), provided detailed descriptions of isolation methods and exosomal characteristics, and discussed biological activities or biomedical potential.
Results: Thirty studies met the inclusion criteria for analysis. Plant-derived exosomes are nano-sized vesicles harboring bioactive components that can be integrated into traditional herbal medicine and serve as natural drug delivery systems.
Conclusions: Plant-derived exosomes hold significant potential for enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of medicinal herbs and elucidating the underlying mechanisms of traditional medicine. However, further research is required to standardize isolation protocols and conduct clinical evaluations.
