Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a school-based intervention for improving students’s physical activity duration.
Subject and methods: A cluster randomized controlled trial community intervention study was conducted among secondary school students in Ho Chi Minh city from October 2022 to May 2024. Each group included 4 schools with 288 students in the intervention group and 329 in the control group. The study measured moderate physical activity (MPA), vigorous physical activity (VPA), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) using an Actigraph GT9X device at before the intervention, and one month and six months post-intervention. The intervention program was designed based on a survey of factors related to physical activity and was implemented at the school, family, and student levels.
Results: Post-intervention assessment showed that MVPA increased in the intervention group but decreased in the control group, with between-group differences in changes at T1 and T6 of 11.8 minutes/day and 6.8 minutes/day, respectively (p < 0.001).
Conclusion: The initial intervention showed some positive effects in increasing physical activity time. However, its long-term sustainability remains limited.
