Objective: To evaluate the additional effectiveness of therapeutic ultrasound in the rehabilitation of patients with simple shoulder periarthritis treated with electroacupuncture and Quyen ty decoction.
Methods: An open-label, controlled clinical intervention study included 60 matched patients. The intervention group (n = 30) received electroacupuncture and Quyen ty decoction plus therapeutic ultrasound, while the control group (n = 30) received electroacupuncture and Quyen ty decoction alone. Treatment lasted 15 days. Outcomes were assessed at pre-treatment, day 7, and day 15 using SPADI, McROMI, TCMSS, and overall response.
Results: Baseline total SPADI scores were comparable (69.90 ± 6.09 versus 69.70 ± 5.56; p = 0.895). Total SPADI was lower in the intervention group at day 7 (25.10 ± 14.82 versus 37.43 ± 16.38; p = 0.003) and day 15 (6.40 ± 9.00 versus 16.60 ± 15.20; p = 0.002). The before treatment-day 15 reduction was greater with ultrasound (63.50 ± 7.15 versus 53.10 ± 12.00; p < 0.05). At day 15, normal abduction, internal rotation, and external rotation were achieved by 86.7%, 86.7%, and 90% of the intervention group, compared with 53.3%, 50%, and 60% of controls (p < 0.05). Good overall response occurred in 83.3% versus 46.7% (p = 0.012).
Conclusion: Adding therapeutic ultrasound resulted in earlier and greater improvements in pain, shoulder function, and range of motion. Larger randomized studies with longer follow-up are warranted.
