Abstract

Background: Endoscopic variceal ligation is an easy-to-implement, short-term procedure suitable for emergency treatment of patients with bleeding gastric varices. Therefore, we study " Preliminary Outcomes of Endoscopic Band Ligation for Bleeding Gastric Varices" with the aim of evaluating the rate of hemostasis rate, complications, and factors related to the outcome of treatment. Methods: Prospective interventional case series). There were 32 patients with active gastric variceal bleeding who received banding ligation: 22 patients had type 1 gastroesophageal varices, 6 had type 2, 4 had isolated gastric varices. Liver function was classified as Child-Pugh class A in 10 patients, class B in 13 patients and class C in 9 patients. After endoscopic treatment, intravenous esomeprazole 40mg q12 h was given. Results: Emergency gastric variceal ligation arrested bleeding in 32 of 32 patients (100%). Early Recurrent bleeding was noted in 5 of 32 (15,6%). No patients died (0%). All patients with recurrent bleeding were successfully re-treated. Cirrhosis Child – Pugh C; low platelet (Platelet count < 50 G/l); type 2 gastroesophageal varices  and Grade III gastric varices are factors that increase the rate of recurrent bleeding after the procedure. No association was found between PT < 50% and the risk of Recurrent bleeding. Conclusions: Gastric variceal ligation is a safe and effective treatment for the different types of gastric varices but especially type 1 gastroesophageal varices and isolated gastric varices
