Objective: To investigate the prevalence of atrial fibrillation, its risk factors, and thromboembolic events among patients treated for cardiovascular diseases at Military Hospital 103. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 231 inpatients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation at the Department of Cardiology (A2), Department of Interventional Cardiology (A16), and Stroke Center (A14) of Military Hospital 103, from July 2025 to March 2026. Results: The overall prevalence of atrial fibrillation among hospitalized cardiovascular patients was 7.0% (231/3,302), with the highest rate recorded in the Department of Cardiology (11.2%). The mean age was 72.8 ± 11.1 years, and patients aged ≥ 65 years accounted for 80.1%. Common risk factors and comorbidities included hypertension (74.5%), heart failure (69.3%), chronic kidney disease (49.3%), and a history of stroke/TIA (36.8%). The rate of thromboembolic events at admission was 29.9%, predominantly driven by stroke/TIA at 23.8% (accounting for 79.7% of all thromboembolic events). Notably, 54.1% of patients had not received anticoagulant therapy prior to admission. Conclusion: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation and associated thromboembolic events among cardiovascular inpatients is substantial, characterized by a high burden of comorbidities and a low rate of pre-admission anticoagulation. These findings highlight the urgent need for enhanced screening, early diagnosis, and optimization of prophylactic anticoagulant therapy in this high-risk population.
