Abstract

Background: Prehypertension represents an early stage of abnormal blood pressure and is associated with an increased risk of progression to hypertension and cardiovascular events. Determining its prevalence and associated factors is important for cardiovascular disease prevention at the community level.. Objectives: (1) To determine the prevalence of prehypertension among non-hypertensive adults aged 18–69 years in Bu Dang Commune, Dong Nai Province. (2) To identify selected factors associated with prehypertension. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 539 non-hypertensive adults aged 18–69 years residing in Bu Dang Commune. Results: The prevalence of prehypertension was 59.2% (319/539). After adjustment, prehypertension was significantly associated with age 45–54 years (aOR=2.04; 95% CI: 1.12–3.73) and 55–69 years (aOR=2.12; 95% CI: 1.07–4.20), lower educational attainment (secondary school or below) (aOR=2.60; 95% CI: 1.49–4.54), a family history of hypertension (aOR=1.82; 95% CI: 1.11–2.98), smoking (aOR=5.49; 95% CI: 2.62–11.49), insufficient physical activity (aOR=3.03; 95% CI: 1.85–4.98), obesity (aOR=3.26; 95% CI: 1.59–6.68), consumption of salty foods ≥3 days/week (aOR=4.46; 95% CI: 2.33–8.55), use of vegetable oil ≤2 days/week (aOR=3.39; 95% CI: 1.70–6.76), and following a weight-reduction diet ≤2 days/week (aOR=4.05; 95% CI: 1.92–8.55), all p<0.05. Conclusion: Prehypertension was highly prevalent among the surveyed non-hypertensive adults aged 18–69 years in Bu Dang Commune. The findings highlight the need to strengthen health education, behavioral interventions, and early screening to reduce the burden of prehypertension at the primary healthcare level.
