Objective: To investigate the distribution characteristics and antimicrobial resistance profile of isolated Klebsiella aerogenes.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 3041 clinical specimens collected from patients at Dien Bien provincial General Hospital in 2024.
Results: The prevalence of K.aerogenes infection was 1%. The majority of isolates were recovered from sputum (80%) and pus specimens (13.3%). The bacterium was more prevalent among male patients (70%), individuals aged over 60 years (63.3%), and patients admitted to the Department of Intensive Care and Department of Emergency Medicine (70%). All isolates were susceptible to Cefepime, while the highest resistance was observed to Ampicillin (100%), followed by Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid (96.7%), Piperacillin/Tazobactam and Cefotaxime (both 90%), Ceftazidime, Crtapenem, Tobramycin, and Ciprofloxacin (all 86.7%), Imipenem (83.3%), Meropenem (80%), Gentamicin (56.7%), and Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole (43.3%); no resistance to Amikacin was observed.
Conclusion: The distribution of K.aerogenes was associated with age, specimen type, and hospital ward. Cefepime and Amikacin may be considered suitable antibiotic choices for infections caused by K.aerogenes.
