Objectives: Surveying erectile dysfunction using the IIEF-5 scale in patients with atrial fibrillation and to assess associated factors at the Vietnam National Heart Institute, Bach Mai Hospital.
Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 110 patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation at the Vietnam National Heart Institute, Bach Mai Hospital, from April 2025 to July 2026. Laboratory parameters were extracted from medical records, and erectile dysfunction scores were obtained through interviews utilizing the IIEF-5 scale. Data were analyzed to evaluate statistical associations.
Results: Based on the IIEF-5 assessment, the prevalence of erectile dysfunction among the study population was 85.5%. The age group over 50 years was associated with a 6.2-fold increase in the odds of erectile dysfunction compared to the 18-50 age group (aOR = 6.2; 95% CI = 1.6-23.8, p = 0.008). Persistent atrial fibrillation was associated with an 9.6-fold increase in the odds of erectile dysfunction compared to paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (aOR = 9.6; 95% CI = 1.8-51.5; p = 0.008).
Conclusion: These findings suggest the need for routine proactive screening for erectile dysfunction using the IIEF-5 scale in cardiovascular clinical practice, alongside multidisciplinary collaboration to optimize treatment outcomes and improve the quality of life for patients.
