Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of physiotherapy intervention and daily-living rehabilitation in post-operative patients with lumbar disc herniation, and to analyze related factors.
Methods: A prospective descriptive study on 96 post-operative patients with lumbar disc herniation at the Department of Traditional Medicine - Rehabilitation, Tra Vinh University Hospital from June 2024 to March 2025. Patients underwent 21 days of physiotherapy combined with daily-living rehabilitation, evaluated before intervention and on days 7, 14, 21 and one month after using VAS, Schober test, Lasègue test, lumbar range of motion, and ODI.
Results: After intervention, mean VAS decreased from 7.8 ± 1.2 to 1.2 ± 0.6 (p < 0.01); Schober index improved from 12.8 ± 0.5 cm to 14.2 ± 0.4 cm; Lasègue angle from 48.6° ± 8.2° to 76.4° ± 5.8° (p < 0.01); ODI decreased from 62.5% to 10.5%. 86.5% of patients achieved good or very good outcomes. Significant factors were age (OR = 2.42; 95% CI: 1.02-5.76) and time of rehabilitation initiation (OR = 3.15; 95% CI: 1.28-7.76).
Conclusion: Combined physiotherapy and daily-living rehabilitation significantly improved pain, lumbar mobility and daily activities in post-operative lumbar disc herniation patients. Early intervention and attention to elderly patients should be emphasized.
