Abstract

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the most common causes of acute lower respiratory infections in children globally, accounting for about 40% to 90% of pneumonia-related hospitalizations and up to 50% of pneumonia-related hospitalizations in children. Objective: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of RSV pneumonia in children aged 2 months to 60 months at Bac Ninh Provincial Central Hospital. Material and Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 241 children diagnosed with RSV pneumonia between 2 and 60 months of age during September 2025 and June 2026. Results: Male children accounted for a higher proportion (62.2%). The average age was 19.35 ± 15.48 months. Most children were diagnosed with pneumonia (97.9%), with severe pneumonia accounting for 2.1%. The most common subjective symptoms were cough (99.8%), wheezing (91.7%), fever (85.9%). Lung rales were the most common (98.8%), chest retraction (2.5%). The children with elevated white blood cell count were 46.1%, neutrophil count were 63.1%, and CRP were 27.8%. Chest X-ray findings mainly showed increased bronchial density in both bronchi (88.4%). Conclusion: RSV pneumonia in children in this study was mainly mild to moderate, with typical clinical and paraclinical features such as cough, wheezing, fever, stridor, and predominant pulmonary rales. Severe complications of RSV pneumonia were uncommon.
