UNDERWEIGHT MALNUTRITION AMONG CHILDREN UNDER FIVE YEARS OF AGE IN YEN CUONG COMMUNE, BAC ME DISTRICT, HA GIANG PROVINCE, AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS

Abstract

Objective: To assess the prevalence of underweight malnutrition among children under 5 years of age in Yen Cuong commune, Bac Me district, Ha Giang province, and to identify associated factors.

Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study involving 661 child-mother pairs (children under 5 years of age) in Yen Cuong commune, Bac Me district, Ha Giang province.

Results: The mean age of the children was 26.3 ± 16.9 months. The prevalence of underweight malnutrition was 14.4%, of which severe underweight accounted for 1.4%. The highest prevalence of severe underweight was observed among children aged 6-11 months (4%), while moderate underweight was most common in the 24-35-month age group (19%). Factors significantly associated with underweight malnutrition in univariate analysis included male sex, maternal education below high school level, poor or near-poor household economic status, fewer than three antenatal care visits, and having three or more children in the family (p < 0.05). In multivariable logistic regression including eligible variables selected from univariate analysis, maternal education below high school level remained independently associated with underweight malnutrition (aOR = 9.9; 95% CI: 1.3-75.2; p = 0.027).

Conclusion: The prevalence of underweight malnutrition among children under 5 years of age in Yen Cuong commune remains a public health concern. Strengthening child nutrition interventions and improving maternal knowledge and practices regarding child feeding are essential to alleviating the burden of child malnutrition in the locality.
