Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics, imaging, and treatment outcomes of acute intussusception in children aged 4-24 months of age using pneumatic reduction at Thai Binh Pediatric Hospital.
Subjects and methods: A retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study of 245 children aged 4-24 months of age admitted to Thai Binh Pediatric Hospital with a diagnosis and treatment of acute intussusception using pneumatic reduction at Thai Binh Pediatric Hospital from October 1, 2022 to December 31, 2023.
Results: The most common clinical manifestation was sudden abdominal pain, accounting for 94.7%. The main physical symptom was a palpable intussusception mass (64.5%). Ultrasound showed a doughnut sign in 100% of cases. Fluid at the intussusception site and dilated bowel loops with gas were present in 15.9% and 11% of cases, respectively. X-ray showed a right hypochondriac opacity in 41.2% of cases, and no gas was found in the cecum (52.7%). The fluid-gas level was 0.8%. The pneumatic reduction method was successfully used in 96.7% of cases. No complications were recorded.
Conclusion: The clinical manifestations of acute intussusception in children under 24 months are quite diverse and nonspecific; imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosis. Pneumatic reduction is a safe and highly effective method for treating this condition.
