Objective: To describe the hand hygiene compliance rate among Health Care Workers (HCW) in the Intensive Care Unit and to identify risk factors.
Methods: A descriptive analytical cross-sectional study was conducted from the April 2022 to August 2024. The researchs team observed hand hygiene compliance throught the camera to minimize the Hawthorne effect. All staffs in ICU were informed about the hand hygiene monitoring process.
Results: The percentage of hand hygiene among HCWs in ICU at Vinmec Times City Hospital was 66%. Postgraduate educational level and moments after body fluid esposure risk were positively associated with hand hygiene compliance (adjusted, OR = 1.602; 95% CI: 1.333–1.925); p < 0.001 and OR = 1.326; 95% CI: 1.040–1.692; p = 0.023), respectively. Year of work experience (≥ 5 years), wearing gloves and moment before touching a patient and before clean/aseptic procedures were negatively associated with compliance (adjusted OR < 1; p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The hand hygiene compliance rate among HCWs in the ICU at Vinmec Times City Hospital was 66%. Compliance was lower before clean or aseptic procedures, and when gloves were worn, and among healthcare workers with more than 5 years of work experience.
