Objective: To describe the results of preliminary screening for Thalassemia in pregnant women at Lao Cai Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital in 2025-2026.
Subjects and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Analysis of 98 pregnant women who visited Lao Cai Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital from August 2025 to March 2026.
Results: The average age of the study subjects was 28.57 ± 6.19. The prevalence of Thalassemia carriers was 23.6%, of which the prevalence of α-Thalassemia was 20.2%, and the prevalence of β-Thalassemia was 5.5%. The prevalence of carriers tended to be higher in the Dao and Tay ethnic groups and those living in rural areas.
Conclusion: The prevalence of Thalassemia carriers is high in pregnant women of the Dao and Tay ethnic groups. Therefore, it is necessary to raise awareness among pregnant women and their families about thalassemia and to implement policies to support screening for this congenital blood disorder.
