Abstract
Objective: To analyze the relationship between the Triglyceride - Glucose (TyG) Index and some paraclinical characteristics in patients with Diabetic Kidney Disease at Thai Nguyen National Hospital.
Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 968 type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) including 329 diabetic patients without nephropathy and 639 diabetic patients with diabetic nephropathy at the Outpatient Department of Thai Nguyen National Hospital.
Results: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index was 8.71±0.46 in diabetic patients without nephropathy and 9.05±0.46 in diabetic patients with nephropathy. The levels of glucose, urea, creatinine, and triglycerides, were significantly higher in in diabetic patients with nephropathy compared with diabetic patients without nephropathy. The TyG index showed statistically significant correlations with age and several laboratory parameters; however, these correlations were very weak. The TyG index was significantly and inversely correlated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (r = −0.3747). The TyG index demonstrated the ability to predict reduced renal function at an optimal cut-off value of 8.90, with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.6997, a sensitivity of 57.5%, and a specificity of 73.9%.
Conclussion: The TyG index was inversely associated with eGFR and may serve as a useful screening marker for assessing the risk of renal function decline in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
