Objective: Investigating the Association Between Body Mass Index, Lifestyle Factors, and Serum Testosterone Levels in Men.
Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 2177 men attending Vietnam – Sweden Uong Bi Hospital.
Results: The median serum testosterone concentration in the study population was 4.48 ng/mL, and the prevalence of low testosterone was 3,7%. Men younger than 30 years had significantly higher median serum testosterone concentrations than men aged 30 years or older (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed in the prevalence of low testosterone between these subgroups (p > 0,05). Overweight (OR = 1,840), obesity (OR = 3,532), and the daily use of dietary supplements or over-the-counter medications (OR = 2,831) were identified as independent predictors associated with a significantly increased risk of low testosterone (p < 0,05). In contrast, cigarette smoking was inversely associated with low testosterone (OR = 0,549, p = 0,016).
Conclusion: Serum testosterone concentrations in men are strongly influenced by body mass index, lifestyle-related behavioral factors, and the daily use of dietary supplements or over-the-counter medications.
