PREVALENCE OF VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY AND CORRELATIONS BETWEEN PLASMA 25-HYDROXYVITAMIN D CONCENTRATIONS AND SELECTED BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF BONE METABOLISM AMONG FEMALE HEALTHCARE WORKERS AGED 45–55 YEARS

Abstract

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its correlation with serum ionized calcium, phosphorus, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels among female healthcare workers aged 45-55 years.

Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 406 female healthcare workers aged 45-55, currently working at several health facilities in inner Hanoi and in Thai Nguyen province. The study was carried out from January 2025 to April 2026.

Results: Using a cut-off value of <30 ng/mL, the proportions of participants with low and adequate Vit.D levels were 79.8% and 20.2%, respectively. When a cut-off value of <20 ng/mL was applied, the corresponding proportions were 19.7% and 80.3%. The mean levels of vitamin D, ionized calcium, phosphorus, and PTH were 26,04 ± 7,14 ng/mL, 1,15 ± 0,10 mmol/L, 0,95 ± 0,17 mmol/L, and 3,74 ± 1,79 pmol/L, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in ionized calcium levels between the vitamin D-deficient and vitamin D-sufficient groups at both cut-off values of 20 ng/mL and 30 ng/mL (p<0.001 for both comparisons), while no significant differences were found for phosphorus and PTH (p>0,05). Vitamin D was positively correlated with ionized calcium (rho=0,280; p<0,001), and weakly positively correlated with phospho (rho=0,115; p=0,022) and age (rho=0,114; p=0,023). No significant correlation was found between Vit.D and PTH levels.

Conclusion: Among female healthcare workers aged 45–55 years, 79.8% had Vit.D levels below 30 ng/mL, including 19.7% with Vit.D deficiency below 20 ng/mL. Vitamin D levels showed weak positive correlations with ionized calcium, phosphate, and age, with the correlation with ionized calcium being stronger than those with the other factors.
