Abstract

Objective: To analyze the correlation between concentrations of thyroglobulin with clinical and paraclinical characteristics in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer adjuvant radioiodine (iodine-131) therapy at Thai Nguyen National Hospital.

Subjects and methods: A descriptive longitudinal follow-up study was conducted on 70 patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) who received adjuvant Iodine-131 (I-131) therapy at the Oncology Center of Thai Nguyen National Hospital.

Results: Females accounted for 90.0% of the study population, with a mean age of 48.13 ± 11.79; 74.3% of patients were under 55 years old. Median thyroglobulin (Tg) levels pre-treatment, at 3 and 6 months post-treatment were 1.725 ng/mL, 0.06 ng/mL, and 0.045 ng/mL, respectively, showing a significant decrease (p<0.001). No significant changes in anti-thyroglobulin (Anti-Tg) levels were observed before and after treatment (p = 0.257). Pre-treatment, no association was found between Tg levels and tumor characteristics; however, a significant negative correlation was noted with Anti-Tg levels (r = -0.349, p = 0.003). Post-treatment, Tg levels were significantly associated with lymph node metastasis, tumor location, and tumor count (p = 0.026, 0.037, and 0.020, respectively), while no correlation was found with Anti-Tg, T3, or FT4 levels (p > 0.05).

Conclusion: Thyroglobulin (Tg) levels decreased significantly following adjuvant radioactive iodine (I-131) therapy. Cervical lymph node metastasis, tumor location, and tumor number were factors associated with post-treatment Tg levels. Pre-treatment, Tg and Anti-Tg levels were negatively correlated, whereas no correlation was observed between Tg levels and thyroid hormone levels (T3, FT4).
