Background: Vitamin D plays an important role in bone metabolism and cancer biology. However, plasma vitamin D status in patients with bone cancer in Vietnam has not been well studied.
Objectives: To determine plasma vitamin D levels and evaluate their association with biochemical, immunological markers of bone metabolism in patients with bone cancer.
Subject and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 93 patients with bone cancer, including 52 primary bone tumors and 41 cases of bone metastases. Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25-OH)D], calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were measured and statistically analyzed.
Results: The mean of plasma vitamin D level was 21.68 ± 7.36 ng/mL, with 86.03% of patients having vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency. Patients with bone metastases had significantly lower plasma vitamin D levels compared to those with primary bone tumors (19.03 ± 7.12 vs. 24.32 ± 6.84 ng/mL; p < 0.001) and a higher prevalence of severe deficiency (63.41% vs. 28.84%; p = 0.04). Plasma vitamin D levels tended to decrease with advancing disease stage. No significant correlations were found between plasma vitamin D levels and calcium, phosphorus, PTH, or ALP (p > 0.05).
Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in patients with bone cancer (86.03%), particularly in those with bone metastases, and is not associated with biochemical markers of bone metabolism.
