PLASMA VITAMIN B9, B12 CONCENTRATIONS IN MAINTENANCE HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS AT MILITARY HOSPITAL 103

Abstract

To investigate serum vitamin B9 and vitamin B12 concentrations and their associations with selected clinical and laboratory characteristics in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) at Military Hospital 103. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in 62 patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis between March 2021 and September 2021. Results: The median serum vitamin B9 concentration was 10.8 (8.0 – 18.2) ng/mL, whereas the median serum vitamin B12 concentration was 405.5 (298.0 – 604.0) pg/mL. The prevalence of vitamin B9 and vitamin B12 deficiency was 1.6% and 4.8%, respectively. Lower serum vitamin B9 concentrations were associated with longer dialysis duration and lower serum albumin and hemoglobin levels. Serum vitamin B9 concentration showed a moderate inverse correlation with dialysis duration (r = −0.41, p = 0.001) and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (r = −0.38, p = 0.002), and a moderate positive correlation with serum albumin (r = 0.39, p = 0.002) and hemoglobin concentration (r = 0.32, p = 0.012). Lower serum vitamin B12 concentrations were associated with older age (> 60 years) and overweight status. Serum vitamin B12 concentration was moderately inversely correlated with age (r = −0.34, p = 0.007) and body mass index (BMI) (r = −0.45, p = 0.0003). Conclusion: The prevalence of vitamin B9 and vitamin B12 deficiency among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis was low. Serum vitamin B9 concentration was associated with dialysis duration, serum albumin concentration, hemoglobin level, and NLR, whereas serum vitamin B12 concentration was associated with age and BMI.
