Objective: To evaluate initial results of total hip arthroplasty (THA) using 3D-printed patient-specific instruments (PSI) at Bac Ninh General Hospital No. 1, June 2024 – August 2025.
Subjects and method: 17 consecutive patients with hip osteoarthritis undergoing THA with 3D-printed PSI, selected by convenience sampling. Prospective case series. Primary outcome: deviation of actual cup abduction and anteversion angles from PSI plan measured on postoperative radiographs. Secondary outcome: Harris Hip Score (HHS). Significance threshold: p < 0.05.
Results: Mean age 55.0 ± 10.78 years (38–72); 94.12% male. Mean surgical time 75.29 ± 9.75 min; no blood transfusion; primary wound healing in 16/17 cases (94.12%), one superficial infection managed conservatively. Mean deviation: abduction angle 0.79 ± 1.75° (95% CI 0.07–1.51°); anteversion 0.72 ± 2.81° (95% CI −0.72–2.16°); 88.24% within 5° for abduction, 94.12% within 5° for anteversion. HHS improved from 51.59 ± 3.59 to 89.12 ± 5.57 (difference 37.53, 95% CI 35.12–39.94, p < 0.01). Good-to-excellent outcomes: 94.12%.
Conclusion: 3D-printed PSI achieved placement close to the preoperative plan and significantly improved postoperative hip function. Controlled studies with larger samples and longer follow-up are needed to confirm efficacy and durability.
