Background: In children, gastroduodenal ulcer not only causes gastrointestinal complications but also affects nutritional status and anemia. Poor nutrition can lead to anemia, while the disease causes blood loss and impairs iron absorption, resulting in iron deficiency anemia and creating a vicious cycle that worsens children’s nutritional status and overall health.
Objectives: To evaluate the nutritional status, prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency anemia, and associated factors among children with peptic ulcer disease at the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital.
Results: The prevalence of wasting was 12.5%, while the rates of overweight and obesity were 19.3% and 13.6%, respectively. The overall prevalence of anemia was 53.4%, of which iron deficiency anemia accounted for 19.3%. The risk of iron deficiency anemia among children with peptic ulcer increased with age and was associated with caregivers’ educational level and abnormal nutritional status.
