Objective: To evaluate nurses' compliance with the ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) prevention care bundle at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Bac Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital No.2 in 2026.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 385 observations of 35 steps across 7 care procedures for mechanically ventilated pediatric patients, performed by 13 nurses. Each step of every procedure was evaluated on a 3-level scale: well performed (2 points), poorly performed (1 point), and not performed (0 points). The criterion for overall care bundle compliance required the well-performance of all 35 steps, achieving a total score of 70.
Results: The overall compliance rate with the complete VAP prevention care bundle among observed episodes of care for mechanically ventilated pediatric patients was 49.6%. Compliance rates for individual bundle components were 60.3% for hand hygiene, 80.8% for aspiration and reflux prevention, 62.9% for endotracheal suctioning, 82.6% for ventilator circuit care, 87.6% for heated humidification system care and 59.6% for oral care.
Conclusion: The compliance rate with the ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention care bundle remains low. It is essential to enhance inspection, supervision, and training programs for nursing staff.
