THORACOSCOPIC LOBECTOMY FOR NON-SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER IN THE ELDERLY OVERCOMING THE AGE BARRIER: A SINGLE-CENTER ANALYSIS

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the early outcomes of video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy (VATS lobectomy) for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in elderly patients (>60 years old) and to determine whether advanced age remains a barrier to surgical indication.

Methods: A retrospective descriptive case series was conducted on patients diagnosed with NSCLC who underwent VATS lobectomy at Cho Ray Hospital between January 2024 and December 2024. Clinical, paraclinical, surgical, and early postoperative data were collected. Patients were divided into two groups (≤60 years and >60 years) for comparative analysis.

Results:  

Conclusion: Video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy can be performed safely and effectively in elderly patients when appropriately selected. Advanced age should no longer be considered a contraindication for surgical treatment of non-small cell lung cancer.
