Objective: To determine the percentage of certain urinary tract diseases and analyze factors affecting test results using 10-parameter urine dipsticks.
Subjects and Methods: The study subjects were employees of companies in Ho Chi Minh City who signed contracts for health checkups, aged 18 to 60. The study was conducted from March 2024 to December 2025 at Le Van Thinh Hospital. Study design: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Sample size: N = 1733 participants. Inclusion criteria: All employees undergoing general health checkups. Semi-quantitative testing was performed using 10-parameter urine dipsticks on the Clinitek Novus analyzer (Siemens).
Results: The mean age of participants was 40.59 ± 9.33; males accounted for 81.4% and females 18.6%, with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.003). The prevalence of urinary tract infection: nitrite positive 39/1623 cases = 2.4%; leukocyte positive 170/1623 cases = 10.5%; both nitrite and leukocyte positive 39/1623 cases = 2.4%. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 71/1623 cases = 4.4%; among these, 65/71 cases (accounting for 91%) had positive urine glucose with normal blood glucose. The prevalence of glomerular disease: proteinuria positive in 144/1623 cases (8.9%); isolated hematuria in 88/1623 cases (5.4%); both proteinuria and hematuria positive in 75/1623 cases (4,6%). In hepatobiliary metabolism: urine bilirubin positivity was 14/1623 cases (0.9%); urine urobilinogen positivity was 212/1623 cases (13.1%).
Conclusion: Screening urinary tract diseases using 10-parameter dipsticks detected relatively high rates of urinary tract infections and diabetes among employees, while kidney diseases and hepatobiliary were found at lower rates. When interpreting dipstick test results, attention should be paid to interfering factors (false positives and false negatives).
