ANEMIA STATUS AND COMPLIANCE WITH CLINICAL BLOOD TRANSFUSION PROCEDURES IN PATIENTS WITH COLORECTAL CANCER AT NGUYEN TRI PHUONG HOSPITAL

Abstract

I

Objectives: To evaluate anemia status in colorectal cancer patients and to assess nurses’ compliance with the clinical blood transfusion procedure at Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital.

Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 82 colorectal cancer patients with hemoglobin < 12 g/dL treated between January 2015 and January 2018. Anemia was classified according to WHO criteria. Compliance with the transfusion procedure was assessed using the hospital transfusion checklist.

Results: The mean hemoglobin level was 101.1 ± 22.15 g/dL, with 53.7% of patients having moderate anemia. Among the 82 patients, 45 received blood transfusions. Compliance with the blood transfusion procedure was retrospectively assessed using quality assessment checklists archived in the medical records and was documented as satisfactory across the pre-transfusion, transfusion, and post-transfusion phases. The overall rate of transfusion-related adverse events was 13.3%, consisting mainly of mild allergic reactions and febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reactions, with no severe adverse events attributable to technical errors.

Conclusions: Anemia is common in colorectal cancer patients. Strict adherence to the transfusion protocol contributes to ensuring safety in clinical practice.
