Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of laparoscopic surgery for appendiceal peritonitis in older adults at Thong Nhat Hospital from January 2023 to December 2024.

Subject and method: A restrospective study of 87 patients aged ≥ 65 years who underwent laparoscopic surgery for appendiceal peritonitis at the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery in Thong Nhat Hospital.

Results: A total of 87 patients were included, with a mean age of  75.08 ± 8.3 years. 19.5% had comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, ect. The postoperative complication rate is higher in patients with comorbidities. The mean operative time was 92.3 ± 35.6 minutes; 65.5% of patients required postoperative drainage; the mean length of stay was 6.6 ± 1.8 days.

Conclusion: Laparoscopic surgery is an effective and safe treatment for appendiceal peritonitis in older adults. Particular attention to perioperative management and postoperative care is warranted for patients with comorbid conditions to reduce complications.
