Background: Knee osteoarthritis is the progressive disease which causes persistent pain and decreases the motor functions. Total knee replacement is indicated for severe knee osteoarthritis.
Study objectives: To evaluate the results of total knee replacement surgery treating severe knee osteoarthritis at the 1A Hospital.
Materials and methods: Prospective descriptive case series study. From 01/2018 to 5/2023, we have done total knee replacement surgery for 51 patients (56 knees) that had the removal of the posterior cruciate ligament and had no patellar replacement.
Results: the average age was 66 years old (youngest: 45, oldest: 88). There were 10 men (24,3%), 41 women (75,7%). There were 29 left knees and 27 right knees operated on and 5 patients replaced their both knees. The average of hospital stay:11,4 days. The mean preoperative and postoperative KS was improved from 34,7 ± 9,7 to 85,3 ± 6,7. The mean preoperative and postoperative KFS was improved from 36,7 ± 10,7 to 83,3 ± 11. KSS grade: excellent: 78,6%, good: 17,9%, moderate: 3,5%, and poor: 0%. After surgery, there were 82% of knees with no pain, 18% of knees with slight pain, 49 cases were satisfied with the result of surgery (96%).
Conclusion: The results of total knee replacement for severe osteoarthritis of knees are good. Total knee replacement reduces pain, improves motor functions of knee, helps to move more stable, brings quality of life to patients with severely damaged joints.
