Abstract

Objective: To determine the rate, causes, and associated factors of elective surgery cancellation at Children's Hospital 2.

Methods: A cross-sectional study on 3,488 elective surgeries at the Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation, Children's Hospital 2, from January to June 2024. Data were collected from medical records and analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression.

Results: The cancellation rate was 8.3% (289/3,488 cases). Main causes were medical/professional (61.9%), hospital-related (12.1%), process-related (5.5%), patient-related (5.5%), and others (14.9%). Preventable causes accounted for 38.5%. Independent associated factors included: age 1–5 years (OR = 12.72; 95% CI: 8.59–18.84), percutaneous surgery (OR = 9.97; 95% CI: 4.40–22.61), open surgery (OR = 4.48; 95% CI: 2.33–8.62), blood diseases (OR = 8.98; 95% CI: 2.32–34.69), and digestive diseases (OR = 4.21; 95% CI: 1.81–9.78).

Conclusions: The elective surgery cancellation rate was 8.3%, primarily due to medical causes. Preventable causes (38.5%) provide a practical basis for improving operating room management.
