EVALUATION OF INTERVENTION EFFECTIVENESS AND BARRIERS TO WEARING REFRACTIVE CORRECTION GLASSES AMONG CHILDREN FROM DISADVANTAGED BACKGROUNDS IN CA MAU PROVINCE, 2025

Abstract

Objectives: (1) To evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention providing refractive correction spectacles for children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Ca Mau Province in 2025; and (2) to describe selected barriers to wearing refractive correction spectacles among this population. Methods: A controlled before–after interventional study was conducted among 96 schoolchildren who underwent eye examinations and received spectacles through a support program of Ca Mau Eye Hospital, and 96 schoolchildren in a control group who were not eligible for free spectacle provision during 2025. Descriptive and analytical statistical methods were applied in conjunction with appropriate statistical tests. Statistical significance was defined as p < 0.05. Results: After 3 months of intervention, the proportion of students achieving visual acuity ≥7/10 in the intervention group increased from 6.3% to 81.3%, which was significantly higher than that in the control group (14.6%; p < 0.05). At 3 months post-intervention, vision-related quality-of-life scores in the intervention group were markedly higher than those in the control group across all assessed domains. The proportion of students who reported regular spectacle wear reached 70.8% in the intervention group, compared with 20.8% in the control group. Following the intervention, barriers related to spectacle wear were reduced in the intervention group, whereas no statistically significant changes were observed in the control group.
