Objectives: To describe clinical and paraclinical characteristics and evaluate early outcomes of open surgery for nodular simple goiter at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital.
Methods: A retrospective-prospective descriptive study was conducted on 46 patients diagnosed with nodular simple goiter who underwent open thyroid surgery at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital from January 2025 to November 2025. Clinical records, ultrasound findings, and thyroid hormone tests were collected and analyzed using SPSS 26.0.
Results: Patients aged 30–49 years accounted for 93.5%; females comprised 58.7% of cases. The most common clinical manifestation was a palpable neck mass (50.0%), while 32.6% had no obvious symptoms. Main reasons for surgery were anxiety about the disease and cosmetic concerns. Grade 3 goiter accounted for 41.3%, and TIRADS 3 was the most common ultrasound category (37.0%). Goiter size was associated with compressive symptoms. No statistically significant agreement was found between the number of nodules on ultrasound and intraoperative findings. Mean operative time was 76.2 ± 12.7 minutes; mean postoperative hospital stay was 4.1 ± 1.3 days. No early postoperative complications were recorded. Good early outcome was achieved in 89.0% of patients.
Conclusions: Open surgery is a safe, feasible, and effective treatment for nodular simple goiter. It provides good lesion control, short postoperative recovery, and a high rate of favorable early outcomes.
